"‘Life hasn’t always been easy for me and my mother. She’s a single parent, having to raise four children on her own." –Rudolph Lekay

An inspiring 18-year-old matriculant from Mitchell's Plain, Cape Town, is teaching us a lesson on perseverance.
Rudolph Lekay, a student at Florida High School in Ravensmead, is determined to earn enough money from his side hustle to attend his matric dance this October.
The young man starts his day at 4:30 am, where he finds a lift to the local bus and taxi rank. Here he sells sweets and chips to the commuters waiting for their transport. At 7:20 am, he packs up and goes to school.
Life hasn’t always been easy for me and my mother. She’s a single parent, having to raise four children on her own. I know deep down in her heart she would’ve given everything to make sure my matric ball was great, but financial circumstances prevail.- Rudolph Lekay
After seeing the older ladies at the taxi ranks selling vetkoek, he had the idea to sell sweets and chips.
"Lekay used his R150 Christmas gift money as start-up capital. He took a minibus taxi to a wholesaler near Promenade Mall and stocked up: soft sweets for R45, small chips for R55, and see-through packets for R30. He made it back home with stock and hope," reports Cape Town ETC.

His scrappy attitude and 'can-do' approach have seen him earn up to R600 a day. His goal is to reach R10,000 by September. This will cover his suit, transportation and everything else he might need for his matric dance.
Watch him speak about his plans and entrepreneurial journey from Facebook.
According to Cape Town ETC, "Lekay says his matric dance ticket alone will cost R800, but he’s focused and disciplined and refuses to let financial hardship stop him from celebrating a major life milestone."
Lekay's story has touched many people's hearts on social media, with many rooting for him to reach his goal for his matric dance and life plans.
His resilience and positive approach say something special about this young man and his will to create a better life for himself and his family. A true legend in the making.
