We live in a world where technology is often used to commit crimes, but it can also be used to tackle crimes affecting our communities.

The Digital Law Company's Emma Sadleir proved that it takes a community to help eliminate cybercrime and bullying.

Therefore, the launch of a new safety app, HelpMe in Durban North, is welcome news, and we hope it will assist communities all over KwaZulu-Natal (KZN).

HelpMe is an app that connects the user to their spouse, kids, car, and even their home. Swiping lets you access a world of features that transform your safety and security.

"HelpMe protects…anytime, anywhere, any situation," according to the HelpMe website.

The founder, Jess Watts, hopes that the HelpMe app will change the way people protect themselves and their families.

Watts was inspired to create the app after having gone through a frightening ordeal 15 years ago. Whilst travelling, he got stranded without petrol in Ballito.

The app currently services over 300,000 users around South Africa and is ranked as SA's number 1 security service app on Hello Peter.

HelpMe is said to be the world's first 'data-free' app, which means it can still be used without data.

The app has a range of support features, including a data-free panic alert, a 24/7 crisis support team, breakdown and accident coordination, guardian alert, home alert, hijack alert, and the 'my child' feature that allows users to track their child's location and contact them in case of an emergency.

The 'Community Connect and Protect' event will take place at the Northwood Crusaders Sports Club on 2 and 3 August.
