Online users angry over couple's AI-generated alligator video

Before AI-generated videos, social media users would develop over-the-top stories to get views online.

While many people fell for these elaborate narratives, they were more inventive and innovative than some artificial intelligence (AI) content being shared online.

Not too long ago, we saw a video of a lion eating meat inside a grocery store. The video riled people up, while others immediately recognised it as AI.

We also saw how a man who was once sceptical of AI grew so attached to his AI assistant that he not only named her but also proposed to her...

Another video recently shared on social media shows a couple kayaking at night in what is believed to be Puerto Rico and encountering a wild animal.

The video shows them recording themselves when suddenly an 'alligator' swims by. Alligators, crocodiles and their close relatives are known to be violent and dangerous, so the fact that this one just allegedly swam past them without doing anything to the couple left many users suspicious.

Then the argument about whether the video showed an alligator or a crocodile ensued. One person wrote: "It’s believable. Gators are docile creatures and not aggressive. This is normal gator behaviour. Floridian here."

Another responded: "That's a crocodile, not an alligator. Wrong continent."

The latter might've been correct, seeing that crocodiles have been known to inhabit areas of Puerto Rico, but if it were real, it most likely would've been a Caiman

Many users shared their frustrations over people using AI to generate unbelievable content for clicks.

While the video looked realistic at first glance, closer examination shows that the woman is looking in the wrong direction and the man's hand takes on a different shape when he 'pets' the animal.

We know that the line between realism and simulation is fine these days, but using it to fool the internet is wrong. It isn't seen as impressive but less-than-appealing.
