Miss SA 2023 entrant challenging beauty standards
Updated | By East Coast Radio
It just takes one person with a vision to challenge the closed-minded stereotype of what beauty means...
Progress and growth come in all shapes and sizes, and this year we are seeing a fair share of that from the Miss South Africa pageant.
Known as a beauty pageant that evolves, the organisation has certainly become more and more inclusive over the years. Unfortunately, there was a time when the term 'beauty' had become somewhat of a stereotype.
And people strived to conform to that standard, and as much as many people still do, there are those who are breaking, or should we say shattering these stereotypes.
And thereby encouraging a more fruitful way of looking at beauty.
One woman that is making this roof shattering possible is Laura Wagner-Meyer.
Born with a congenital neural tube defect, she needs the help of crutches to walk. But that has not stopped her from fulfilling her life's purpose.
One very important part of that purpose involves becoming Miss South Africa and to challenge the ideology surrounding beauty.

Wagner-Meyer is feeling inspired and excited about the way the world is looking at beauty as a whole.
Case in point, the Vogue cover features disabled models.
Showing young girls and boys that someone like them physically is being represented in the media can be a real gamechanger.
It can inspire and motivate them to think big and achieve big as well. Ultimately, isn't that what we want for our kids regardless of their physical state?
