KZN mountaineer answers spam call mid-climb

"If you saw where I am, darling, my premium would be incredibly high..."

On any given day, many South Africans find themselves dodging telemarketers trying to sell them something.

For some, it is all too easy to hit block and remove them from their call logs for that day, only to have them call back using another number or a voice-prompted recording to try and make a sale.

However, not everyone has the bold guts to hit the block button. Some people answer the call. Perhaps they are expecting a call from someone, or don't screen their calls. Whatever the reason, it leaves them open to receiving these calls in the most unlikely of situations.

This is what happened to one KwaZulu-Natal man, Josh Crickmay. Crickmay is a wildlife filmmaker and self-proclaimed adventurer.

Crickmay was climbing the Dragon's Tail Via Ferrata in the northern Drakensberg when he received a call from a telemarketer who was presumably trying to sell him insurance

The funny part about this was that not only did he answer the call while hooked onto his climbing gear, trailing across the steel rock climbing anchors, but he was also polite with the lady on the other side of the call.

People jumped into the comments section to share their wildest telemarketer calls and how amusing Crickmay's response was.

  • "We were in the hospital, and my brother was literally on his deathbed. He was getting regular calls from friends and family to say goodbye. No lie, he got one of those car warranty marketing calls. True to form he sorta (sic) giggled and said, "Thanks, but I don't think I will need a longer warranty on my car." One of my favourite memories of him."
  • "Respectfully decline the opportunity” while hanging off a cliff. This just made my day!"
  • "I wanna know his server because the range is something else."

One person even shared how they are known for missing calls, even from family members. "So I am famous in my family for missing their calls - my brother just sent me this saying - If THIS dude can answer his bloody phone mountain climbing what is wrong with you…?"
