Jes Foord's comeback: Strength after trauma

The launch episode of ECR's new podcast, The Comeback with Carol Ofori, opens with a story many South Africans will never forget - Jes Foord’s.

Content Warning: This episode discusses sexual assault and may be distressing to some listeners. Listener discretion is advised.

In 2008, Hillcrest local Jes Foord was raped by five men in front of her father. What followed was a decision that changed the course of her life - and helped countless others.

Jes chose not to hide. Instead, she spoke out, started the Jes Foord Foundation, and became one of the country’s most fearless voices for survivors of sexual violence.

In this moving first episode, Carol sits down with Jes on The Comeback to talk through the moment everything changed, the early days of fighting for justice, and the purpose that’s driven her ever since. The episode also explores the legal reforms Jes helped drive alongside the DNA Project, including a landmark shift in how DNA is collected from arrestees.

Beyond the courtroom, the foundation’s real power lies in its support work: free counselling for survivors and mentorship programmes that aim to break cycles of violence.

Jes shares why working with young boys is especially close to her heart - and how prevention starts with conversations that change mindsets early.

The Comeback with Carol Ofori is a new East Coast Radio podcast about resilience, healing, and what it really takes to rise again. Listen to the first episode now—and subscribe for new episodes every Thursday.
