Flora, together with the Heart and Stroke Foundation SA, has released a hard-hitting YouTube video imploring all parents to get heart healthy for the sake of their children.

“When you see yourself through your children’s eyes, it’s a sobering reminder of your priorities in life,” comments Flora Brand Director Deorah van der Zee. “And if you aren’t looking after yourself now, chances are you won’t be there to see them grow up or meet your grandchildren!”

With Mothers’ Day on the horizon, the beautifully made video is a timely reminder to moms and dads of what we are worth to our children, and how important it is to take our heart health seriously.

Many people don’t realise that heart disease is the second leading cause of death in South Africa, yet 80% of heart attacks and strokes are preventable. This is because raised cholesterol – a key risk factor in heart disease – can be identified and treated before it causes irreversible damage.

The two-minute You Tube video features actual families from Villiersdorp, a town in the Western Cape where Flora ran a 21-day cholesterol-lowering challenge from 23 January to 14 February 2014. Simply and sensitively filmed, it centres on the children’s feelings towards their parents and their reactions to their parents’ looking after their heart health for a healthy future with them.

By making this video public, Flora wants to give all parents a wake-up call. One in four South Africans dying from heart disease is no laughing matter.
