When Phoenix resident Trevor Manikkam married the love of his life in February, little did he know that this wasn’t going to be his only life-changing event of 2013. On Monday, 18 November 2013, East Coast Radio fan Trevor was crowned the champion on The Grand Challenge on The Breakfast Stack with Darren Maule. He walked away with a whopping R22,000 and a lifetime of bragging rights!

“I always wanted to settle the debate with my wife. We listen to The Grand Challenge every day on our way to work and it feels great to finally prove to her that I am a smarty pants,” says the Standard bank forex consultant.

Trevor was one of scores of east coasters who turned up at Suncoast on Friday, 15 November, to take a shot at the prize money of R22,000 which had built up over the past three weeks.

Sixty contestants were out through their paces in three hours. The average score was 7 out of 10, proving that it’s far easier listening to The Grand Challenge on ECR than playing it yourself!

Only five east coasters out of the 60 who participated in the challenge, scored a perfect 10. All of them were invited onto The Breakfast Stack on Monday morning.  Moira Ramtahal, Shawn Linigton, Yugendran Pillay and Bradley Ramela joined Trevor in-studio for the nail-biting finish.

Tension mounted as the minutes ticked by. Feet shuffled, throats were nervously cleared and sweaty palms were tightly clasped. And then the moment arrived.

Trevor was selected as the winner of the biggest prize money to date on The Grand Challenge on The Breakfast Stack!

Hours later, the unassuming Durbanite said the happy news was still sinking in. “It feels nice to win something. Other than my wife Subashni’s heart, I’ve never won anything!”

Trevor says he and his wife are planning to buy their own home so they’ll be using the prize money as a deposit.

Following concerns raised, East Coast Radio conducted an inquiry into the The Grand Challenge contest that was held on Friday, 15 November 2013.

In light of the fact that there were inconsistencies in the overall communication, we have decided to award both Trevor Manikkam and Bradley Ramela the prize money.

We would like to sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused.
