Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela: Need we say any more?
The international legend passed away on 5 December 2013. Madiba is the reason we are able to celebrate 20 Years of Freedom on East Coast Radio, and that is one of the many reasons he makes it right to the top of our list.
Remember back in 1995 when he wore Francois Pienaar's Springbok jersey at Ellis Park and handed the Rugby World Cup to the Bok captain? Goosebumps? Just one of the incredible memories he has gifted South Africa.
The rest of our short list is randomly selected and in no particular order! As you'll see at the bottom, we need your input too. We're looking for the people who have become icons in whatever field over the past 20 years.
Princess Diana: Taken tragically in a car accident in Paris on 31 August 1997, the princess of Wales will always be remembered as one of the most loved members of the Royal Family.
Oprah Winfrey: The queen of the talk show - also a philanthropist, actress and producer, Oprah Gail Winfrey, who came from nothing has ended up one of the wealthiest and most well-known women ever through hard work and determination. Winfrey was born on 29 January 1954. She is currently 60 years old.
Michael Jackson: Michael Jackson is undoubtedly one of the most well-known and talked about music stars of our time. With a music career spanning decades, and often shrouded in controversy, The King of Pop would definitely be on anyone's list of most famous stars of the past 20 years. He passed away on 25 June 2009 at the age of 50.
Jacques Kallis: Yes, we know there is also Sachin Tendulkar, but we could not omit arguably the best all-rounder the cricketing world has ever seen! Kallis, who retired from international cricket recently, at the age of 38, and has no doubt left a massive void in the Proteas squad.
We could carry on for days and days listing all the superstars (across all spheres) over the past 20 years, but we'd like to hear some of YOUR favourites.
