‘Selfie’ driver Nicci apologises

Durban student Nicci Redelinghuys, whose 'driving selfie' caused an uproar on social media, has apologised for any harm that she did - and stated that she wasn't physically driving when she took the pic. Msizi James is willing to give her the benefit of the doubt.

I cannot believe how much attention this story has received in the past couple of days.

I am not going to pass judgement nor weigh in on what she did. We all know (including Nicci) that what she did was rather irresponsible.

But you know the saying there are always two sides to each story? Well, I liking giving people the benefit of the doubt.

I happen to know Nicci quite well as she went to school with me a few years ago.

For that reason I have taken keen interest in her version of events.

This morning I received a message on WhatsApp from her, in which she apologised for her actions.

Here is what she had to say:

“Hi All. Nicci Redelinghuys here. I am sure that you are all aware of the picture and comments that went viral today. I have decided to respond to all persons on my contact list regarding the media rage posted on Facebook. I believe that I have caused a big amount of damage and a lesson has been learned the hard way. I would like to state on my side, to clear the air that I was not physically driving when  I took the photo of myself. As most of you noticed the photo was taken whist I was stationary and I was not on the N3. I know my actions were wrong and as a 20-year-old I did not know how to respond to the social media outrage than to put my defence up. My language and profanity as a young lady was unacceptable and I apologize if I have done any harm. My intention was not to come across as an irresponsible girl but was just an innocent private joke with my friends. I take full responsibility for my actions and ask that everyone find it in themselves to forgive me. I also encourage people not to copy what I have done as I would not for anyone to have to deal with what I had to deal with today. Reading all the comments was extremely hurtful but I understand that I brought it on myself. I would like to apologize to my father and those who know my father. I feel that I have let him down and those who know him. Once again my apologies to South Africa and my family. Nicci Redelinghuys"

I think I will give her the benefit of the doubt, but only time will tell if she has learnt her lesson!
