The nine-meter bronze statue was unveiled on 16 December and stands at the Union Buildings in Pretoria.

The Beeld reported that the sculptors, Andre Prinsloo and Ruhan Janse van Vuuren added the rabbit to the statue after the department refused them to engrave their signatures on the trousers of the statue.

The rabbit represents haste. In the Afrikaans language rabbit is called ‘haas’ which also means haste.

The sculptors said that it represents the tight deadline they worked under.

Although Mr Prinsloo said that the ‘small symbol’ was not meant to take anything away from the statue, the South African government still want the rabbit removed as soon as possible to restore dignity back to the statue.
