The Breakfast Stack’s Natarah Nadesan took a much needed break recently and travelled to the other side of the province, where she soaked up some sun and got to chill out…

To put things into perspective, my husband and I hadn’t taken a holiday since our wedding, just over a year ago. We were desperately in need of a getaway to repair our tired bodies and refresh our senses.

We were thrilled when opportunity came knocking in the form of a romantic weekend away to San Lameer, on the KZN south coast. We took a slow drive to our destination on Friday afternoon, leaving behind stressful early mornings, demanding projects and household chores. We knew we’d entered a new, tranquil world as we made our way through the main gates of San Lameer.

We checked into the exquisite Mondazur Resort Estate Hotel, overlooking the still waters of the vast Mondazur Lagoon. After downing some chilled welcome drinks at reception, we made our way to our stunning room to shower and get ready for supper.

We were given a warm reception by the restaurant staff at dinner, who had booked a table for us near the heater. I couldn’t have asked for a better seat!

I had a portion of juicy chicken livers for starters followed by a rich, comforting bowl of butternut and sweet potato gnocchi and an extra-large cappuccino. The meal was delicious and filling.

We got up early the next morning to take in the sights and sounds of the estate. We were greeted by the most magnificent view from our bedroom and captured a few shots just as sunlight broke over Mondazur Lagoon.

As a couple, we’d always wanted to but never got the chance to play tennis together. So, we hired our rackets, got some tennis balls and drove to the courts. It was beautifully warm and conditions were perfect for a day outdoors. It didn’t take long for me to realise how pathetic my aim was in the game but that didn’t stop us from having loads of fun. Of course, being the gentleman he is, my husband let me win!

We then took a drive around the splendid estate in a golf cart and watched as keen golfers made their way from one hole to the other on perfectly manicured lawns. The estate is very safe. Apart from the hotel, where we stayed, there are self-catering apartments and chalets that big families can enjoy.

We made our way to Mondazur Lagoon and jumped into one of the brightly coloured paddle boats.

It was our mini water adventure and we managed to burn quite a few calories from breakfast. What a spread! We were treated to fresh fruit, cereals, yoghurt, a variety of cheeses and hot meals and there were pastries and crumpets too! How could I resist?

After building up a sweat on the water, we rushed back to our room to quickly shower and change for our complimentary full body massage that the hotel had so graciously organised for us. We were in a state of bliss for 60 minutes. Our therapists kneaded our tired and stiff muscles from head to toe, tackling every knot with their fingers and elbows. We walked out of the spa new beings.

We didn’t realise things were about to get better. We went back to our room to relax and were amazed to find it had been transformed into a romantic haven. We were being spoilt with the very sensual and delectable Amore Package, reserved for couples only *wink*. The chef prepared special meals for us to enjoy in our room that night. All we had to do was put on our fluffy, white gowns, pop open the champagne and soak in a rose petal infused spa bath, surrounded by globe candles. Let’s just say it was a night to remember!

The next morning, it took me half an hour to peel my body off our cosy mattress. We took one last look at the breath-taking view from our private balcony before heading down to breakfast. For some unknown reason, I had a hankering for tea, cheese and vegetable sausage. After consuming three cups of tea, I was satisfied. When we checked out a few minutes later, reality sank in. We were heading back home, which wasn’t a bad thing. I wished we could have stayed longer. We thanked every staff member with a token of appreciation for their generosity and care. We were blown away by their humility and kindness. Everyone at San Lameer went out of their way to ensure our every need was met, we really felt like royalty.

It’s amazing how two days away from home can rejuvenate the mind and body. We couldn’t have asked for a better place to get away from it all. Thank you to everyone at San Lameer and Mondazur Resort Estate Hotel for creating beautiful memories for us. You will always have a special place in our hearts and like I said before, this visit was definitely not our last.
