Back to school memories
Updated | By tanstan fourie

January is here, and you know what that means - it's Back-to-School season!
As many of our listeners are preparing their children for the new school year, The East Coast Breakfast team is reminiscing about their old school days, especially those embarrassing moments we all had and still make us cringe just thinking about to this day.
The stories shared behind closed doors are just too good not to share with you!
So sit back, scroll down and enjoy not only the funny stories but the pictures attached to them.
Darren:
I have a story about going back to school and deciding I was gonna get better marks, pay attention in class and apply myself. The best advise I got, was sit in the front of the class where teacher can see you, you can hear and see everything clearly and the temptation to misbehave or 'space kadet' would be curbed. This worked for half a day. I was so used to sitting at the back where I could stretch my legs out in front of me that... When Mr. Cornelius tripped over them...
So it only took one day before moving to the back of the class again...
This is what guys would look like 25 years after leaving school!
Nats:
Here I am (in Grade 7) posing next to my brother Jose. I really wish I’d listened to my mum when she told me to wear my navy Alice band. #RedRegret
Gabriel:
When I was in Standard 5(Gr7), at the height of Jean-Claude Van Damme's career. During break, I had a pair of shorts, that were on their last threads. While playing with friends, I decided I was going to do a "mae geri"(a front kick). The stitching from the back...all the way to just below the zip. Basically, splitting the shorts into a two piece. This was met by a roar of laughter from my friends, as I was wearing "Spiderman" undies. To make matters worse, I didn't even have a jersey to cover up "Chubby Karate Master's" wardrobe mishap.

I started school early in Zimbabwe where I was born, so when I moved with my family to South Africa in 1982, I was not kept back a year. And so I was always about 18 months younger than anyone else in my grade - or Standard as it was known back then.
I can’t remember exactly what grade this picture was taken.
It was Pinetown Boys High back in 1987 or 1988, so grade 9 or 10, and I was pretty much one of the smallest guys in the grade. It didn’t help that my school uniforms were “hand-me-downs” from my three older brothers, and were about two sizes too big for me. I was asked once if I was bullied or teased because I was younger and smaller, but I was way too cheeky for that. I always used my wit and humour to keep me going and make school fun.
To the parents, teachers and kids starting, ending or continuing their schooling journey, best of luck for the year ahead!
You can do it!
We want to see how your kids look this morning so please share their first day back to school pics with us!
