Cape yellowtail are visitors to the KwaZulu-Natal coast for several months of the year.

These powerful fish are most often found in KZN in winter and early spring.

I remember a late fishing partner catching one at Kelso many years ago.

This past season I was told of good yellowtail fishing at spots like Aliwal Shoal, Protea Banks and off Orange Rocks near Uvongo.

Recent research indicates that yellowtail stocks off South Africa are healthy.

Today we go to the Far East for what they refer to as yellowtail kingfish.

To me what they caught below looks pretty much like our yellowtail.

The fish below certainly put up the type of fight one expects from a yellowtail.

I am hoping to see one during Quattro King of the Sea in May this year.

I suspect my skipper on the day may again choose to fish off Shelley Beach.

That is where a yellowfin tuna slipped my hook right next to the boat.

Competition rules may make targeting tuna and couta a better option than chasing after yellowtail at Quattro.

However, the anglers below are ruled only by their desire.
