Van Heerden values Bafana chance

Amazulu defender, Marc van Heerden, says being called up to the Bafana Bafana squad for their opening 2017 Africa Cup Of Nations Qualifier against Gabon is a major positive for him.

The 27-year-old was one of the most consistent left-backs in the league last season, despite Usuthu failing to avoid relegation to the National First Division.

Van Heerden, who featured in both of Bafana Bafana's matches in the COSAFA Cup last month, faces stiff competition to make the team to face Gambia in Durban on Saturday.

Orlando Pirates pair, Thabo Matlaba and Patrick Phungwayo, are also in the squad.

"There is a nice atmosphere within the team and good camaraderie," he said.

"All round there is good competition within the squad. Whoever gets a chance on the day has got to perform to their utmost best. I think it is healthy to have good competition within the squad," Van Heerden added.

Bafana coach, Shakes Mashaba, is expected to name his team and captain on Friday.

Bafana are 69th and Gambia 160th in the latest FIFA world rankings.
