Umhlanga surfer wins in California

Umhlanga surfer, Beyrick de Vries, has made a winning start at the Vans US Open of Surfing in California.
De Vries won a first round heat in which Durban surfer, Travis Logie, ended fourth and last.
Another South African, Dale Staples, was third in his opening heat at Huntington Beach.
Compatriot, Shaun Joubert, had to settle for third in second round action.
Joubert ended the heat behind elite tour campaigners Kolohe Andino and Adriano de Souza.
Kelly Slater and Bede Durbridge both won their second round outings in California.
Jordy Smith is yet to surf his second round heat.
He will be up against Dion Atkinson, Yadin Nicol and Hodei Collazo.
