SARU didn't know about Roux inquiry

South African Rugby Union president Oregan Hoskins has revealed that Jurie Roux was not interviewed by the Union's General Council before he was appointed as CEO.

Roux is in the spotlight as investigations into the misuse of funds during his stint as chairman of the Maties Rugby Club continue. This culminated in the Democratic Alliance calling for Roux suspension as CEO of SARU on Thursday.

The latest development came in the form of a press release from Hoskins - who outlined the process that eventually saw Roux employed as CEO of SARU. Hoskins made the statement to quash reports that the sport's governing body knew about the inquiry into Roux’s employment at Stellenbosch University when he was appointed CEO of SARU.

According to Hoskins, Roux's appointment was handled by an external, independent recruitment company which is yet to be named.

That company handled applications, made a shortlist then interviewed candidates before making recommendations to SARU's General Council - which were then accepted.

Hoskins also said that none of the potential candidates were interviewed or had any engagements with SARU officials. Roux's recommendation did not include any information about an inquiry into his employment at Stellenbosch.

Roux is being sued for R32 million by the University of Stellenbosch. The institution believes Roux used that amount of the university's money to fund the Maties Rugby Club.
