PHOTOS: Freak catches mirrorfish
Updated | By Staff Writer
The trio mounted their kayaks, while I was left to work in the office at East Coast Radio headquarters in Umhlanga - But let me not dwell on that and focus instead on telling you their story.
Alain cornered the Fishing Freaks and suggested an afternoon fishing session off Umdloti.
Alain was clearly hungry to put his new Stealth 525 kayak to the test and to do so in the company of two more experienced fishing kayakers.
The threesome somehow wangled time off work and were greeted by promising ocean conditions and some small groupings of baitfish.
They saw snoek and bonito clearling the surface, but failed to secure a bite in the process.
Wes and Alain continued to chase snoek, while Dick persisted in trolling mackerel.

The bigger fish proved elusive and the trio were beginning to contemplate the possibility of drawing a blank.
However, this all changed when Dick stumbled across baitfish going nuts.
He investigated the commotion and spotted a school of kingfish just below the ocean surface.
The next hour or so proved a dream for Dick and Alain and a nightmare for Wes.

Dick landed two blacktip kingfish and a mirrorfish, while Alain caught three blacktip kingfish - his biggest estimated at about 8 kilograms.
Their lures were also taken by both a shad and a queenfish.
Wes failed to land a single fish and is still pondering exactly what went wrong.
