The 26-year-old has been at the coal-face all year long, having played in the World Cup as well as IPL. While he wasn’t at his boundary-smashing best in the Proteas tour of India, Miller has rekindled his form in the Ram Slam tournament.

The former Maritzburg College pupil admitted it has been a long year of travelling.

“Individually it’s been quite a roller-coaster to be honest but I really enjoyed my cricket like I always want and try to do every time I walk out to represent my country or province. But it has been long; we’ve been away on tours, the World Cup, IPL, Bangladesh and India. It’s been a lot of travelling but I enjoyed it,” Miller said.

Miller believes the Proteas enjoyed a fairly successful year on both the T20 and ODI fronts – pointing to the results on two difficult tours.

“I think we did really well to be honest. We lost to Bangladesh but it’s a tough series over there. People underestimate Bangladesh – they’re unbelievable in their own conditions. They beat Pakistan, us and India as well so they’ve knocked over some big teams. Going to India, I think we had a great comeback – there was a lot of passion and commitment shown by all of the guys individually and collectively. I think we learned a lot of things from Bangladesh moving to India and that’s what it’s all about,” Miller said.

As for the Test team’s current fortunes, Miller believes the side needs to persevere through the tough conditions and be more clinical.

“I wish I knew, but they are going to have to take a lot of responsibility individually and try and put together big partnerships with the bat. Bowling wise, bowl in good areas and try restrict them to competitive totals.”

As it stands, the Proteas need 278 runs to win the third Test with three days of play remaining.
