Marlins too strong for Windbreakers

The Kwazulu Marlins delivered a rampant performance against the Eastern Cape Windbreakers in the first BNLSA game of the day at the Wembley Arena in Johannesburg yesterday.

Marlins handed the men from Port Elizabeth a 90-54 thrashing, to extend their winning streak to four matches. The Marlins took a while to get going in the first quarter, something that they seem to have made a habit of this season, and came from behind early on to take a 18-14 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Coach Craig Gilchrist introduced youngster Bandile Nsele into the game late in the 1st quarter, and the youngster made an immediate impact scoring four quick points, to help shift the momentum in favour of the Marlins.

The Durban based team, never looked troubled as the 2nd quarter began and took control of the match from that point on, only allowing the Windbreakers a further 11 points in the quarter with some aggressive defence and some clinical finishing, that saw the Marlins take a 47-25 lead at half time.

Things got worse for the Windbreakers in the third quarter as Bandile Nsele, was delivering his best game of the season, and the Eastern Cape outfit had no answer for Nsele’s tenaciousness as the Marlins extended their lead, only conceding 9 points whilst scoring 22 points in the 3rd quarter.

It was much of the same in the fourth quarter, where Coach Gilchrist, had the luxury of giving his younger chargers more court time, but the day belonged to young Nsele who recorded a season best of 28 points, as he claimed the game MVP award. Another solid performance from the Marlins New Zealand player Benjamin Constable who also recorded is second Double Double of the season (10 rebounds and 10 points), as well as another young rising star in the side Landelani Ngubane (14 rebounds and 8 points) and the veteran Ryan McFie (6 rebounds and 10 points).

Dinilesizwe Madikwa top scored for the Windbreakers with 18 points followed by Luvuko Manana with 15 points, as the Marlins closed out the game 94 points to 50. Next up for the Marlins, and their last fixture for the 2015 Basketball National League Campaign, is the dangerous Mpumalanga Rhino’s team, next Sunday in Johannesburg.
