Mak's Midmar debut

Mak's Midmar debut

I honestly never thought I would see myself competing in the Midmar Mile. It happened this weekend though, and I can now tick it off my bucket list.

Looking on from afar, the Midmar Dam looked very small and it seemed the distance was fairly reasonable and shouldn’t be much of a challenge.

I was pumped before the race and for the first time I was not nervous before a major challenge.

I got in the water - along with my mates, Michael Zuma, Jason McCall and Marco Crestani. This would then be the last time I would see them until I got to the finish line.

Hundreds of people were in the water with me. I looked left, right and centre all I saw was young and old KZN citizens who were eager to finish the race.

After 500m in the dam I suddenly realised this wasn’t as easy I thought it would be. I actually started doubting myself as cramps were starting to take their toll.

I told myself no matter how far it is I would not stop what I had started. I pushed myself, stuck to my stroke and I just kept going until I could see land in sight.

When I got to the finish line I was physically drained. Walking was a mammoth task, but hearing cheers and seeing people clapping brought a huge smile to my face and I felt very proud of myself for completing the race.

I collected my medal and refreshments, and as per normal I was mistaken for the Beast - but that's a story for another day!
