Letsholonyane denies Maritzburg United

A late goal by Reneilwe Letsholonyane deep into injury time helped Kaizer Chiefs to a 1-1 draw away to struggling Maritzburg United in their Absa Premiership match at Harry Gwala Stadium on Saturday night.

Going into the game, Chiefs had not enjoyed much success away at Maritzburg in the past few seasons and the Amakhosi looked in danger of falling to a defeat in KwaZulu-Natal this time.

But just as it looked like more valuable points for Clive Barker's team, Letsholonyane powered in a low shot in the seventh minute of referee’s optional time at the end of the game.

Chiefs coach Steve Komphela's former team, Maritzburg, held a 1-0 lead for most of the match thanks to a Kurt Lentjies penalty in the 20th minute. The spot kick was conceded by Tsepo Masilela who handled the ball in his own 18-yard box after misjudging a cross.

The result sees Chiefs move up to third on the PSL log with 18 points from 11 matches, but results in the remainder of the weekend may see them drop down the standings.

Meanwhile Maritzburg remain in last place, though only on goal difference now. After tonight they drew level on five points with University of Pretoria.

The teams will only be in action again next month, with the Absa Premiership set to go into a recess while the CAF Africa Under-23 Cup of Nations (Olympic qualifying tournament) is played in Senegal.
