The KZN Cross-Country team won eight individual and 10 team medals in Saturday's SA cross country championships in Potchefstroom, with
Bonginkosi Zwane the leading performance earning bronze in the Mens 12km Championships.

Elroy Gelant won both the 4km and 12km championship titles, but the fight for silver and bronze went right down to the wire with both Dericious
Makhobalo and Zwane given the same time of 38 minutes 31 seconds.

Makhobalo was given the nod by the line judge over the 23-year-old from Newcastle. This is the first time in recent years that a KZN man has been
on the podium at the cross-country nationals.

Cary-Ann Smith and Makhosi Mhlongo took gold and silver in the Women 30-34 over a 4km distance, and laid the foundation for KZN to win the Gold team prize. Another of the noteworthy performances came from Khumalo Khulelkani who took silver in the very popular and highly competitive boys under/16 race over 6km.

72-year-old Gill Tregenna was the other individual gold, while team golds came from  the women 45-49 and the women 55-59 age groups. In all the KZN team brought back 5 gold, 9 silver and 4 bronze medals, which is even more remarkable as the championships were held at altitude.
