Kumalo, Mogakane help maintain Dolphins’ unbeaten streak at Cubs Week

A commanding century from Thamsanqa Kumalo and a fine, all-round effort from Andile Mogakane steered the Hollywoodbets Dolphins to their fourth straight victory at the Cricket South Africa (CSA) Franchise Cubs Week in Stellenbosch. The KwaZulu-Natal side overcame the World Sports Betting Cape Cobras by 47 runs in their encounter on Sunday.

The pair, who have represented the Coca-Cola South Africa under-19s, shared a match-winning, 124-run partnership for the third wicket. Khumalo’s 129-ball 113 (15x4s) and Mogakane’s half-century (56) helped their side to 270/7 after winning the toss and electing to bat first.

The Cape Cobras’ Siyabulela Plaatjies was the pick of the bowlers with 3/32.

In their reply, the Cape side struggled to string together partnerships despite another big half-century from Ruan Terblanche (92 off 114 balls, 11x4s, 1x6). With 337 runs under his belt in year’s tournament so far, he was one of only four batsmen to score in the double figures as Yves Kamanzi (4/29) and Mogakane (3/18) led the onslaught that saw the Cobras bowled out for 223 with 2.2 overs to spare.

While the Dolphins have kept their perfect record in this year’s campaign, the Multiply Titans are still in search of their first win after going down by six wickets to the VKB Knights. The bizhub Highveld Lions made it back-to-back wins after securing a thrilling, one-run victory over the Warriors.

Michael Copeland top-scored with 57 off 73 deliveries for the Lions, while contributions from Marco Jansen (47) and Bryce Parsons (45) helped them reach a competitive 231/7 after being put in to bat first.

Although the Warriors began their chase well on the back of good knocks from Matthew Dewar (52) and Tristan Stubbs (51), they went from 153/3 to 227/8 at the end of their 50 overs. Parsons shone with the ball as well, returning figures of 3/42 before Jansen’s (1/38) heroics at the death saw him defend four runs in the final over and earn his side the win.

In the final clash of the day, the Knights heaped more misery on the winless Titans. Calvin Flanagan’s impressive and unbeaten 83 off 63 (11x4s, 2x6s) guided them to a comfortable six-wicket win with 12 overs to spare. The junior Knights were chasing a 218-run target after Jandre Pretorius scored 97 from 113 balls (7x4s, 2x6s) in his side’s 217/4. It was also his second consecutive half-century.

The final day of the CSA Franchise Cubs Week will get underway on Monday, 07 January.
