De Villiers nostalgic after 200th Proteas ODI
Updated | By Gareth Jenkinson
Despite their 5th Tri-Series ODI against Australia being rained out, Proteas skipper AB de Villiers reflected on his career in what was his 200th ODI.
South Africa were looking to beat Australia to book their spot in the final of the series being played out in the Caribbean. But rain had other ideas in Barbados and just an over was bowled before the heavens decided that no more cricket would be played.
It put a damper on what was a milestone achievement for De Villiers. It would have been fitting for the Proteas to claim a victory for their skipper.
Nevertheless De Villiers tried to dust off the milestone, saying he was more fond of the shared milestones he has had with his teammates.
“I’m not too fussed about those kinds of the things - the fact that it rained off doesn’t matter, I take it one game at a time. I guess it’s a nice milestone and a way to wake up and look back at how lucky I’ve been through my career to play so many games and to have been around for so long,” De Villiers said.
“It is a great privilege and an honour to represent this country and to have played for that long is obviously a huge privilege. The little moments I remember are all the team wins, friendships I’ve made over the years but certainly the close games we’ve won as a team more so than personal milestones.”
The Proteas now turn their attention to their final clash against the West Indies. They meet on Friday, and the Proteas will need a win to make sure of a spot in the final.
De Villiers believes recent successes have given them the confidence to deal with the pressure.
