Nail biting finish for Comrades founder's relative

It was down to the wire for Antony Clapham, the great grandson of Comrades founder Vic Clapham, who crossed the finish line in this 90th edition of the ultra-marathon with literally minutes to spare.

38-year-old Antony was running his fourth Comrades. He picked up his pace considerably in the last 30 minutes, enabling him to achieve a 1:52:32 finish.

We've been following the ECR and Old Mutual SA runner in the build-up to the event.

The Durban North resident was one of 15 966 South African men taking part in the race today.

He says his motivation came from the memory of his great grandfather, Vic Clapham.

The first Comrades Marathon was run on 24 May 1921, when 34 runners lined up before the Pietermaritzburg City Hall to commence a race to Durban to commemorate the spirit and camaraderie of the soldiers who fought in the Great War.

It owes its origins to the tireless efforts of Vic  - who was a war veteran and SA Railways engine driver.

Well done Antony, your great grandfather would be very proud!
