McCarthy has been roped in by the Cape Town outfit to fill the void left by the departure of Eric Tinkler who replaces Stuart Baxter at SuperSport United.
This is his very first job as a head coach for the UEFA A coaching licence holder.
He is no stranger to South African football lovers though. He has played for Seven Stars and Orlando Pirates in the domestic league.
The 39-year old has had successful stints with various European clubs as a striker, winning major titles in the process.
He has played for Ajax Amsterdam in the Netherlands, Celta de Vigo in Spain, FC Porto in Portugal and Backburn Rovers and West Ham United in England.
