I will be making my comeback to competitive fishing at the Imperial Nissan Zululand Couta Classic this weekend.

I last fished in a competition back in November when I drew a blank at the Durban Ski Boat Club Jetski Bonanza.

That competition awarded both weight and number of species caught and I am a tad relieved that only one species will count off Mtunzini this weekend.

Couta is the fish we will target and the largest one caught will be worth R30 000.

Targeting just one species makes preparation and fishing on the day much simpler.

Mtunzini locals have been stocking up on mackerel and walla walla this week.

I suspect they are adding to their options should live bait prove difficult to catch this weekend.

I have been told that live maasbanker is attracting couta interest on the KZN north coast at the moment and suspect that we will hope to get a few early in the day.

I bet we will be packing some mackerel and walla just in case.

Last year a couta of 27.6kg won first prize in Zululand and I am hoping to be in the mix come the final weigh-in on Sunday.

I will be up against 103 other competitors this weekend.

There will also be big fishing off Durban this weekend with Durban Ski Boat Club hosting its annual flagship event.

This year the DSBC competition offers two boats to be won and around 400 boats have entered an event boasting R1.5-million in total prize money.

For more details on the Imperial Nissan Zululand Couta Classic you can contact Hylton on 078 854 9358 or Rod on 083 587 3990.

May will see Pumula on the KZN south coast hosting the annual Quattro King of the Sea fishing contest.

Contact [email protected] to enter the Pumula event scheduled for 23 and 24 May.

I fished the Quattro last year and plan to be back there next month.
