Zuma prison release in line with constitution - Ramaphosa
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
President Cyril Ramaphosa has defended the release of his predecessor Jacob Zuma from prison.
Ramaphosa was answering a question from the Democratic Alliance in the National Assembly on Tuesday.
Last month, the former statesman was ordered to return to prison, only to be released two hours later by the Department of Correctional Services.
Zuma was released on remission of sentences authorised by Ramaphosa to low-risk offenders.
Ramaphosa says the release of Zuma and more than 9 000 other prisoners was in line with the constitution.
"Our constitution is very clear, in terms of rules its sets out for process such as granting pardons, remissions and even when we granted remission to 9 000 people, it was not contravention of the constitution, it was very much in line with what our constitution says."
