Xenophobic posts could result in prosecution
Updated | By Sandile Zikhali
People who distribute and circulate fake xenophobic attack information online could land themselves in hot water.
The KZN Provincial Government says a special intelligence team is keeping a close eye on photos and videos posted on social media. The warning comes after false information on attacks in the Durban CBD was circulated online.
Authorities described the information as ‘fake news’.
Acting Premier Ravi Pillay says no xenophobic attacks have been verified in KZN.
"Charges require evidence so that requires forensic investigations that will determine the sources of these posts and that is already under way", he said.
"Unfortunately there are people who would have a negative agenda but our assessments also show there are those who will see an opportunity for criminal looting", Pillay said.
