The suspect is expected to appear before the Mthatha Magistrates Court on Tuesday for Mbolekwa's murder.

"As Walter Sisulu students, we are very clear with the mandate that saying; we don't need [him] in our society anymore. We want him to rot in jail and justice must prevail, we are calling for no bail", said WSU SRC member Themba Zikhali.

Mbolekwa was allegedly shot during a protest action at the university’s Mthatha campus on Tuesday last week.

The suspect, who is an employee at the university, was arrested days after the shooting.

He faces charges of murder and attempted murder after two other students were wounded in the shooting.

Speaking to SABC News outside the Mthatha Magistrates Court, Zikhali said: "It's a very tragic day, but I think we are seeing a tunnel of light as Walter Sisulu students. As we have been crying, this is day seven since our passing of our Sisonke Mbolekwa, we are still in pain and we are very emotional on this matter.

“It's a very emotional day for everyone because Sisonke was a comrade, besiphila naye mihla ngemihla [we were living with her on a daily], so to see that really uhambile [she's gone] it's a very emotional kithi [to us], but we have to show strength and resilience towards the situation."

Zikhali further conveyed condolences to the Mbolekwa family.
