World Cup fraud case postponed to July
The World Cup tender fraud case against former KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Mmamonnye Ngobeni and eight others has been postponed for pre-trial conferencing.
Ngobeni, former police officers Navin Madhoe and Ashwin Narainpersad, and businessman Thoshan Panday are facing 275 counts of racketeering, fraud, corruption, money laundering, and forgery totalling R47 million.
The offences were allegedly committed between March 2009 and April 2010, when the Public Finance Management Act was allegedly ignored in procuring accommodation for police during the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
"The state alleges Panday’s family of being party to a common purpose with Toshan and others to defraud SAPS, through their association with entities which were used to score lucrative contracts from SAPS,” said Investigative Directorate spokesperson Henry Mamothame.

"The policemen who are accused in this matter face accusations of colluding with Panday to receive contracts from the KZN police for an amount of over R47,3 million in fraudulent and irregular tender procedures."
The case has been postponed to 25 July by the High Court in Durban.
