Director of Housing at Wits, Rob Sharman explained what happened.

"This morning there was a unfortunate incident in outside the Wits Medical School, where a large group of students protesting about fees had blocked the road. [The] police arrived, asked them to clear the road so that ambulances and other vehicles could get through to the hospital. The students, with some reluctance, complied - but unfortunately the police then got a bit excited, and stun grenades were fired - and that caused a very tense situation for a while," he said.

The University of the Free State has shut down all three of its campuses.
