Wits student leader, Mcebo Dlamini denied bail
Updated | By JacarandaFM News
Fees Must Fall activist Mcebo Dlamini has been denied bail in the Johannesburg Magistrates Court.
Magistrate Albertus Roux said it would not be in the interest of justice to release Dlamini on bail.
"The inference is inescapable that the applicant has a tendency to commit the type of offences as levelled against him. There is no basis for a belief, as suggested by the applicant, that he was arrested simply because he is one of the leaders of the FeesMustFall movement," Roux said.
Dlamini faces five charges, including assault, theft and malicious damage to property, relating to the violent clashes on the Wits campus earlier this month.
National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Phindi Louw says they welcome the decision.
While fellow student leader, Shaeera Kalla says the denial of bail is political - saying the Dlamini is being sent away for fighting for a just cause.
