Why Zuma won't serve a third term
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
A local political analyst feels President Jacob Zuma’s decision not to run for a third term as leader of the ANC could stem from the turmoil experienced when his predecessor and former President Thabo Mbeki tried to mount a similar challenge.
Zuma told reporters at the ruling party's fourth Annual General Council in Johannesburg at the weekend that he would not return for a third term.
KwaZulu-Natal based analyst Protas Madlala says Mbeki’s attempt to run for a third term turned ugly.
''Probably, he is trying to avoid that. Also it could be that the man has had to deal with one problem after another every week, every month and also he's not that young - it's probably taking a toll on his health and himself as a person,'' he said.
Madlala welcomed talks of a female president for the ANC.
''I think it's long overdue in South Africa - even countries such as Liberia, Malawi which are fairly economically and even politically behind us, they've have really beaten us on that and I believe it would be a glorious day for the country,'' he added.
Meanwhile, the ANC wants South Africa to begin the process of withdrawing from the International Criminal Court.
