AA on why you should top up your fuel tank

There are reports that Chemicals sector union CEPPWAWU has declared industrial action that will affect the delivery of fuel to petrol stations around the country from tomorrow morning.

The planned strike by refinery and depot workers is said to come after a break down in wage talks.

The Daily News is this afternoon reporting that workers have rejected the 7% wage increase put on the table by the employers and want a 9% pay hike for 2016.

Officials from both the union and the National Petroleum Employers' Association have been unavailable for comment this afternoon as they are apparently in talks to avert the strike.

The Automobile Association's Layton Beard says at this stage, the strike will probably not involve petrol attendants, but motorists will start to feel the pinch when pumps begin to run dry.

"Our advice at this stage to all motorist is to top up their fuel tanks as far as possible and as regularly often as possible and to conserve fuel as far as they can. Perhaps, avoiding the use of their air-conditioners if they can,"he said.

Beard says it's unclear how long the industrial action will last.
