What to do if you’re attacked by bees

Pest control expert Ruaan Dyksterhuis says if you encounter a swarm of bees - run.

"Run as far as fast as you can. Bees have a little more venom and a bee will only sting you once where a wasp will sting you multiple times and it also burns very much. You don't get that much of swelling as you would with bees," he said.

The advice comes after an elderly man died after being stung by a swarm of bees in Ixopo in the Midlands yesterday.

Netcare 911's Chris Botha says the man, in his 60s, had been at home with his wife at the time of the incident.

Botha says his wife gave her husband medication for a serious allergic reaction before she put him in a car to get further medical help.

"We met the people en route. They were travelling towards us. When paramedics arrived there they found that the man had stopped breathing. They continued for over an hour with advance life support resuscitation. The man was declared dead there next to the road," he said.
