Water, power blow for Durban North residents

There was a double whammy of power and water outages in Durban North on Friday.

A main feeder substation caught fire on Thursday night, plunging many parts of the suburb into darkness.

Councillor Shontel De Boer is warning it may take days to fully restore electricity.

She says some residents have since been switched to mini substations in Greenwood Park and Redhill.

"This morning, I went and did an oversight at the electrical substation that was on fire. So, what had happened is that the fire had basically damaged and affected the entire Durban North area, from Riverside Road all the way to Virginia won’t have power supply.

"Judging from what we saw there and what the official told us, it is going to take days, not hours, to be repaired. Fortunately, as they are repairing, they will then switch others."

The area is also experiencing water outages.

"It takes up to 12 hours and sometimes more because now, as the water is going through systems, those in the high line areas are not receiving because those that are receiving in the low line areas are now using up the water, and that is from yesterday morning because water went out yesterday."

"Some of us are negatively affected by the shutting; the municipality had no other option but to shut the valve, or else no one would have had water."
