WATCH: Mariannridge substation explosion triggers widespread blackouts
Updated | By Lauren Beukes
The eThekwini Municipality says its technicians will soon look at whether they can safely restore power to areas affected by an explosion and fire at a substation in Pinetown's Mariannridge area.
The blaze, which broke out at the Mariannridge Major facility after seven on Tuesday night, has also had an impact on other substations in Hillcrest, Waterfall and Westmead.
This led to electricity outages in Durban's inner west and southern areas.
A municipal official says their emergency crew has doused the flames.
Once they are given the all-clear, assessors will make their way onto the site to examine the damage and see whether it is possible to start restoring power to some of the affected areas.
