WATCH LIVE: Pressure on Ramaphosa as he delivers tough SONA
Updated | By Nokukhanya N Mntambo
President Cyril Ramaphosa will take to the podium at the Cape Town City Hall on Thursday evening to take the country into his confidence on government’s planned business for the year.
The annual State of the Nation Address will be delivered at 7pm.
Despite widespread criticism, Ramaphosa will have the opportunity to make commitments on tangible solutions to the country’s woes, including a flat economic recovery, political instability and the continued wrath of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Unions, civil organisations and economists want Ramaphosa to detail plans to deal with the prospects of a basic income grant, the rising rates of unemployment, a lack of service delivery and investment opportunities.
There is also growing pressure for Ramaphosa’s administration to arrest the rampant corruption and security breaches in parts of the country seen in the past several months.
