The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has begun deploying soldiers to various hotspots around violence-torn KwaZulu-Natal.
Some 2500 soldiers have been deployed in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng to assist the police in restoring law and order. The arrival of soldiers comes as sporadic unrest and looting continued unabated in Durban and its surrounds on Tuesday.
The violence, looting and destruction of property has seen police arrest 304 suspects in KwaZulu-Natal.

Defence Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula said on Tuesday there is no need at present for a declaration of a state of emergency.
“For now the situation, yes the situation looks like it has gone out of hand and we are all concerned about what is happening, but when he has been advised the president will then declare a state of emergency if a need arises based on that assessment report.”
