WATCH: Armed robbers load ATM onto back of bakkie

An Eastern Cape pensioner had to receive treatment for trauma after an armed gang stormed into a store in Lady Frere, northeast of Queenstown and fired shots as they stole an ATM used to distribute social grants yesterday.

A video of the brazen robbery has been circulated widely on social media.

In the clip, the armed robbers can be seen loading the ATM onto the back of a bakkie.

Social security agency, SASSA in the Eastern Cape says beneficiaries had been in the queue at the time.

"One of our beneficiaries who was transacting at the time was severely traumatised and was taken to hospital," said spokesperson, Lukuzo Qina.

"We arranged that she received her social grant immediately thereafter."

Two other incidents were also reported in the Eastern Cape yesterday.

Qina says a second incident took place Peddie, where people tried to break into a local post office. A third played out in Motherwell in Port Elizabeth where an ATM was targeted.

Eastern Cape police have confirmed the Lady Frere robbery, saying several people have been taken in for questioning.
