On Monday, the bodies of three women and four children aged between two and 11, were found buried beneath heaps of sand in some of the rooms of their home in the south of Johannesburg.

A neighbour who had complained of a stench coming from the property alerted authorities.

It is understood sharp objects were used to kill the victims.

Gauteng police spokesperson, Mavela Masondo says officials are helping the family to prepare for the trip to Pietermaritzburg.

"What we know is that the people who were murdered originally come from Pietermaritzburg, in KwaZulu-Natal. It has been confirmed that six of them will be buried in Pietermaritzburg. Our members are at the mortuary currently assisting the family to take the bodies to KZN," Masondo said.

Authorities say a man who had lived with the family for several months after claiming to be a long-lost relative is believed to be behind the murders.

Masondo says a search for him is under way.

"He was staying with the deceased and he was there the whole time. His name is Sbusiso Earnest Khoza. He is the prime suspect in this case. Since this surfaced, he has disappeared. We have been looking for him since," he said.
