Varying reactions to eThekwini budget

The ANC has welcomed eThekwini Municipality's R41.6-billion budget for the current financial year, saying it represents what local government is all about.

Regional secretary, Bheki Ntuli has welcomed the address.

"It was on point, it was so bias to the poor and we're hoping we're going to be seeing more development taking place in eThekwini. There's going to be catalyst projects that are going to be taking place and we are ready as the ANC," he said.

But the DA's provincial leader Zwakele Mncwango has dismissed it as yet another speech full of broken promises ahead of the municipal elections.

"The problem is when leaders lie to the communities, it then causes people to come back and protest if you 'fake' deliver your promises. So we are saying, mayors fail to be transparent and honest so voters must hold them accountable,"he said.

While the National Freedom Party's Bongiwe Mtshali says they accept the budget, but only if it will truly benefit the people of KZN.

"We appreciate the budget as it is but we need this money to go the people as it is without any corruption. We want the people of eThekwini to gain from this budget," she said.

Earlier today Mayor James Nxumalo presented the budget for the province for 2016/2017 financial year at Durban City Hall.

He said the budget of R41.6 billion supports government’s commitment to broadening service delivery, attracting investors and expanding infrastructure.
