Vaping in schools linked to influx of ads - Phaahla

Deputy Minister of Health Joe Phaahla says they have linked the increase in the use of electronic cigarettes in schools to an influx of advertising.

"Our researchers indicate that there are 230 e-cigarette websites, which are flooding the market and luring young people with all these attractive flavours and sleek marketing."

 

Phaahla made the remarks in Pretoria on Monday morning, at a World No-Tobacco Day stakeholder engagement.

It's been convened as part of the government's ongoing efforts to highlight tobacco control issues arising from the legislation processes in the Tobacco Control Bill. 

 

Phaahla says a recent study has revealed that 1 in 5 high school learners are victims of vaping.

" These young people are being hooked on nicotine early, placing them at risk of anxiety, depression, poor school performance, and other long-term poor health consequences."
