Unions welcome Education Dept’s youth recruitment drive

Teacher unions have welcomed the second phase of the recruitment of unemployed youths as assistants at schools.
The Basic Education Department on Monday opened applications to fill over 280 000 vacancies.
The National Professional Teachers' Organisation of South Africa's (Naptosa) Basil Manuel says it's an important step that will help lighten the load.
"There are talks about seeing how to formalise this. There are thousands of schools that have never ever had assistance, whether they would be secretarial or general workers and it has meant a huge deal to those schools especially, but even in other schools it's helped a lot.
"So we welcome it and we certainly would like to see that schools that don't have do get a permanent staffing of assistance because assistance does help relieve the pressure on schools.
The South African Democratic Teachers Union’s (Sadtu) Nomarashiya Caluza says teacher assistants makes a difference.
"Initiative to support and appreciate the work they did in the first phase. The contract said it would be terminated there was an outcry from teachers, school governing bodies because the work they were doing was noticeable and assisting.”
