Violent protests broke out in the area yesterday - affecting one of the main roads in the township.

At least 5000 students blockaded roads and stoned cars after campus management told them to vacate the premises by this morning.

MUT says Student Financial Aid Scheme, NSFAS, hasn't financially cleared many of the students which means they can't continue with their studies at the institution.

SRC President Vezi Simelane says many students have been left stranded.

"We want NSFAS to manage allocation. NSFAs must not give universities power to allocate money. When you apply, you apply directly to NSFAS and when they respond - they must not respond via the university," he said.

It's understood MUT management hasn't yet responded to the students' demands.

While, here's a statement posted earlier this week on the university's Facebook page.
