Defying the odds: Umlazi man with cerebral palsy bags Master's degree
Updated | By Nothando Mkhize
A Durban man living with cerebral palsy has graduated with his Master’s degree in Social Sciences.
Nkululeko Muthwa was awarded his degree at the University of KwaZulu-Natal this week.
The 32-year-old Umlazi resident researched South Africa's ability to combat human trafficking.
Muthwa, who is an only child, was raised in Umlazi, south of Durban.
His mother, Tina says she's unemployed and spent the past few years living at the varsity's residence to support her son, who physically depends on her.
She says the disability affects Nkululeko's speech and movement.
He's had to use a wheelchair to get around campus.
"He's never stopped learning. He was dedicated to his schoolwork, despite his condition. I would stay with him at the residence to help him get dressed and cook for him,” says Tina.
"One of the challenges we faced was his laptops constantly breaking when he'd drop them because he doesn't have a firm grip. Nonetheless, he wants to pursue his PhD, probably next year."
