Umhlatuze: Councillor attacks pose service delivery threat
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
The City of Umhlathuze says the
ongoing attacks on local councillors pose a threat to service delivery.
One of its councillors has resigned after surviving an attempt on his life.
Lindokuhle Ndlovu came under fire a week ago near his home in Mpembeni, just outside Richards Bay, after dropping off church congregants.
Following the incident, the council resolved to beef up his security.
But Umhlathuze spokesperson Bongani Gina says Ndlovu felt it was best to step down for his safety.
Gina says a by-election will be held to replace Ndlovu.

"Laws dictate that the speaker of council takes care of the ward but to the point where the new councillor get elected. The people of Ward 13 will have the speaker as their caretaker councillor, making sure that service is delivered to the people."
Gina says the recent suspected political hits have sparked safety concerns among local councillors.
"We do have a number of councillors that have come forward to report that they've also been recieving threats and we've involved the SAPS to ensure the threats are assessed and verified."
