The body said it was confident that grade 12's would fare well in this year's exams.

CEO Dr Mafu Rakometsi was addressing the media on its state of readiness in Johannesburg this morning.

"Umalusi observed that the Department of Basic Education has put measures in place across the nine provincial education departments to ensure that competent markers are appointed. The process of improving the quality of marking is still ongoing," he said.

Umalusi said for the National Senior Certificate (NSC) alone, the 2016 examinations will be written by approximately 668 612 full time and 146 997 part-time candidates with a total of approximately 815 609 candidates.

These examinations will take place at more than 7 000 centres and will be marked by over 38 000 markers across the country.

The Independent Examinations Board has registered 11 821 full time candidates across the country and 34 part time candidates in 230 examination centres.

As learners across the county prepare for the exams, concern remains over the learners of Vuwani.

The areas was marred by violent protests, which saw schooling disrupted.

More than 20 schools were also set alight.

In an effort to help learners in the area, the Oxford University Press Southern Africa donated books to schools in Vuwani today.

Marketing Director Rudi Venter told JacarandaFM News that donated CAPS approved books to grades in the foundation phase as well as grades 10 to 12 were handed over.

"With these books, we hope learners will be able to do revisions and prepare for the exams so that they can write their exams and continue their careers and either study or start contributing to the economy by finding jobs," Venter said.
